Managing the business while on vacation
For 10 days in April I was exploring Ireland with my mom and sisters. A bucket list trip that we have been trying to take since March of 2020. This was my first vacation as a new business owner where I was not “on” while away. I wanted to be present and enjoying the moment, not worrying about getting to WIFI so I could handle client requests or troubleshoot a website. It was a little scary but I’m glad I was able to make it happen.
Website Care and Maintenance While Away
Here’s a few things I did to make it work:
As the date got closer, I labeled projects as PRE trip and POST trip and made sure the client was aware.
Was honest about my availability with clients
Worked with another web company to “cover” for me while I was “out of country”. This meant any client that I host and manage care plans for had someone to contact if there was a website emergency. (This was huge for me and the clients.)
Added a Global Pass to my cell phone plan so I had phone and data coverage as I traveled. Another “client emergency” aspect that I felt was important.
Being a small business owner is not an easy task. Especially when it comes to balancing business and life. Although some of those bullet points meant spending more money to take a vacation, knowing that clients were covered in an emergency was worth it.
To my clients, thank you for your patience, support, and encouragement.
